BLAIR kicks off his first visit to the Middle East as the international community’s new envoy

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the region as the new envoy for the "Quartet" of Mideast mediators hoping to add new momentum to fledgling peace efforts between Israel and the Palestinians.

Blair arrives at a time when the Palestinian uprising has fizzled out and Israel has indicated its readiness to work with the new Palestinian leadership after seven years of stalemate.

But critics say. How can the man who brought havoc to Iraq/refused to condemn Israel last summer/rode shotgun with Bush for so long etc, possibly be a plausible peacemaker now?

Bush calls for an international Middle East peace conference

US President George W. Bush's has called for an international Middle East peace conference next fall. Analysts say it could be significant if it meant serious action would be taken to resolve the Palestinian issue.

In my opinion Palestinian issue is the key to solving most of the problems in the Middle East.

Mideast summit proposed by Bush doomed to fail

An editorial in another Palestinian daily, the London-based Al Quds Al Arabi, noted that US President George W. Bush had defined the aims of an international peace conference on the Middle East that he had called for in the fall.

Such aims included the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, but only after Palestinians had proved themselves eligible for statehood, it added.

The chances of this conference succeeding were very dim, argued the independent paper, and the preconditions imposed on the Palestinians seemed impossible to meet, compared to parallel conditions on the Israelis.

"President Bush is telling the Palestinians they have to be [eligible] for their state, meaning they should agree among themselves, build institutions similar to the West, stop resistance ... give up the right of return [of refugees], and accept [Israel's] settlement activities," maintained the paper, with Arab nationalist leanings.

It added that such a summit was unlikely to be any different than other US-sponsored meetings between the Israeli and Palestinian leaderships, which have, hitherto, been futile.

The paper described as "worrisome" that Bush had also urged Arab countries to sign peace treaties with Israel, saying the conference was meant to pave the way for such normalization of relations with the Jewish state.

Daawa camps in Saudi Arabia

via The News :

Something failing to receive attention in Pakistan amid the Lal Masjid crisis was the announcement in Riyadh in the beginning of this month of a decision to restrict the work of "Daawa" summer camps in the country.

Saudi Arabia's top Arabic newspaper Ash-Sharq al Awsat said that the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Daawa and Guidance was "in the final stages of preparing for the process of monitoring the kingdom's religious Daawa camps." All religious camps to be established from this year will be under the direct control of the ministry and the local authorities.

The objective is to put an end to "the exploitation of these camps by agenda-driven individuals," it said, giving as its source a top official of the ministry. The development follows the announcement last month of three members of Saudi Arabia's feared religious police, the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, being put on trial. They are accused of involvement in the death of a man in their custody.

The Saudi government is also investigating an incident in which an Indonesian maid jumped to her death from a fourth-floor apartment raided by the religious police, the beating of a university student accused of having "inappropriate photos" in his mobile phone, and the arrest of two brothers allegedly possessing alcohol. "The commission has taken in the roles of policeman, judge and jury," as a woman columnist wrote in the Jeddah newspaper Arab News.

A statement by the Saudi interior ministry on April 27 indicates the seriousness of the extremist situation in that country. In the previous nine months the authorities had arrested 172 men belonging to at least seven jihadi cells. Saudi Arabia, which saw the bloody seizure of the Kaaba complex in Mecca by armed fanatics in 1979, has at long last begun to deal with its own "Lal Masjid."

Spanish tourists killed in Yemen

The attack on Spanish tourists is a criminal act. Seven innocent Spanish tourists have been killed in the name of Islam. Yemenis militants should know that it will only destabilize their country. It will hurt their tourism industry and national economy.

Yemenis should put aside their internal differences and take a unified stance against these  destructive forces to save their country.

Israel succeeding in fueling intra-Arab conflicts to its own benefit

A commentary in Oman's Al Watan said the bomb attack against UN peacekeepers in South Lebanon that killed six Spanish troops could only be linked to the region's crises, especially those of the Palestinians and the Lebanese, themselves.

The attack, it said, was a "bloody message to whomever ... concerned" that there were those using the tension and charged "atmosphere" to accelerate violence and chaos.

The pro-government daily added that what was happening in the Arab and Muslim world were militant responses to conflicts originally aimed against Israel.

But Israel's insight, with US and Western support, allowed it to successfully turn such conflicts inward, it argued, shifting the threats away from itself.

"The [plan to identify] an internal enemy in every Arab society has succeeded," it said, "and scenarios were [played out] to inflame these enemies against each other, to ease the threat against Israel."

It complained that Arabs had fallen into a trap, insisting that Israel could not live in peace unless it was surrounded by warring countries on the verge of collapse.

"However, will Israel be safe from [these regional fires] in the long term, while it is so close to this turbulence?" it queried.

The threat to Arab national security

The situation prevailing in the the Palestinian territories, and Lebanon, as well as in some Arab countries in Africa indicates us that  threat to Arab national security has become a reality.

US and Israel are conspiring to redraw the map of the middle East
. This will help US and Israel to secure their interests.

Arabs will have to adopt a unified stance against US. Otherwise their weakness will help US fulfill its regional agenda.

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia : The conflicts in Lebanon, Iraq and Palestine could spill over

The Saudi leader said hat the conflicts in Lebanon, Iraq and Palestine spill over into other parts of the world. He said these words in an interview with Spain's El Pais newspaper earlier this week.

It would be wrong to ignore him. International community should try  to find out the causes of the Middle East's worsening condition in hopes of improving it.

The Middle regimes and Bush Administration are equally responsible for the worsening crisis.
The Bush administration lacks a coherent policy in this part of the world - and the results are plain for all to see.

The Administration should rethink its Middle policies and force all the parties to reach a comprise settlement

Summary of Editorials from the Hebrew Press

Haaretz discusses illegal action of Jewish settlers against their Arab neighbors in the West Bank, and claims they are allowed to act with impunity due to their political clout. Ehud Barak, who gave in to the settlers during his previous tenure at the ministry, has promised he has changed. He now has an opportunity to prove it.

The Jerusalem Post blames Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak for the Gaza debacle. Even at this late stage, it is critical that Egypt now act to stop the influx into Gaza of weapons, money, and terrorists back from training. Gaza has fallen. All who fear the spread of the malaise must move concertedly and decisively to contain and limit the dangers - to Egyptians, Israelis, and even to the Palestinians themselves.

Makor Rishon-Hatzofeh comments that the only topic of importance at the upcoming Sharm e-Sheikh summit will be the strengthening of Abu Mazen and the Fatah security forces in wake of the new reality.  The editors state that "Any talk of withdrawal in the current situation is detached from reality."

Where did terrorist and violent thought in Saudi Arabia come from?

Dr. Abdul Salam Bin Salim as-Suhaimi, Saudi researcher specializing in extremist groups, wrote in his entitled “Terrorist and Violent Thought in Saudi Arabia: Sources, Causes for its Prevalence and its Solution” :

“All our problems stem from the Muslim Brotherhood.”

Dr. as-Suhaimi describes the MB's secret organization. He says that members of the movement isolate themselves from society and do not share or declare anything until they have matured.

He says that groups like the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) are directly responsible for the sufferings in Egypt, Algeria and Saudi Arabia

Khomeinist Movement is still active.

According to reports, terrorists killed dozens of civilians and blew up buildings in Mandeli, eastern Iraq.

Mandeli is a Shi’ite Luri majority city. It is impossible for al qaeda or any Sunni groups to operate there. So how did terrorist manage to come and flee ?

Mandeli is close to the border with Iran. Witnesses say that terrorists flee in that direct after their attack.

If we analyze the fighting in Gaza , we come to conclusion that Ismail Haniyeh did not want it. But his ‘Supreme Guide’ Khalid Mashaal is under the influence of Tehran.

Everyone know that Iran has been financing Islamic Jihad since 1980. It has been Tehran’s principle Palestinian client.

We can safely say that Khomeinist Movement is still active.

ALL THAT MADNESS

The Militant Salafism

The militant Salafism that began in 1980s took the simple nature of Islam and added the notion of militancy from the Qutbi current (after Sayyid Qutb). The combining of Qutbism and Wahhabism took place in Afghanistan through Ayman al Zawahiri and Osama bin Laden, where the walaa and baraa equation met with Sayyid Qutb's theory of divine governance that denounced contemporary society as infidels.

The takfiri Qutbi current utilized the physical potentials of the scholastic Salafism and turned toward militancy.

Extreme helplessness of Palestinians

It seems that Palestinians are once again being pushed to the wall. As Israeli aircraft are pounding targets in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon Army with the active support of the United States is busy eliminating Palestinian ‘militants’ in the north of the country.

Israel has initiated the latest wave of atrocities against Palestinians on the pretext of firing of rockets from Gaza which killed a woman but the retaliatory attacks have led to the killing of dozens of Palestinians besides injury to many more.

And this is not the all. Israelis, true to their policy of targeted killings and humiliation of Palestinians, are openingly saying that the Hamas leadership and their buildings would be eliminated. Israel is also conducting raid to arrest Palestinian leadership and already its forces have detained 33 senior Hamas figures in the West Bank including Education Minister Nassereddin al-Shaer.

A number of top Palestinian leaders are already under arrest for the last over one year and the latest incident shows vulnerability of Palestinians. If senior people like Ministers are not safe than one can imagine the plight of ordinary people there. But Israeli Defence Minister Amir Peretz has the audacity to justify the arrests saying they sent a message to the military branches of ‘terrorist organization’, forgetting that the Zionist state itself was indulging in worst kind of terrorism.

And in Lebanon, in the deadliest internal strife since the 1975-90 civil war, at least 80 people have been killed in fierce fighting between the army and Palestinian refugees. Regrettably, the Arab League is sleeping over the widening conflict to the detriment of the regional peace and stability. How durable peace can be achieved by elimination of Palestinians here and there to fulfil Western agenda.

The United Nations should take immediate notice of the situation, ensure cessation of hostilities and send monitors to implement the truce. Otherwise, the spilling of Palestinian blood would create more hatred and resentment and there would be more conflicts and tension in the Middle East.

ELBARADI'S heightened IAEA suspicions regarding Iran

via Khaleejtimes :

ELBARADI'S heightened IAEA suspicions regarding Iran, Washington's hints at 'additional pressure' for a 'change in Iran's calculations' and the emergence of nine US warships carrying 1,700 personnel for muscle-flexing military exercises off the Iranian coast collectively bear the fingerprints of a nervous planning for fresh pressure tactics against Ahmadinejad's government.

With the latter predictably sticking to its original stance and the US now more than ever needing a breakthrough in this regard, an analysis of what could follow puts forth interesting scenarios that a changing Middle East might soon be confronted with.

The might of the American navy extends well beyond the immediate waters hosting their massive warships and aircraft carriers. Since this is the largest Gulf-deployment since the Kuwait war, it is effectively a show of extreme seriousness, signalling that preparations can go to any extreme to secure US interests.

However, the cross-currents of the political transition which is underway with a considerable force within the greater Middle East run counter to an extension of US hardware anywhere in the region. Fed up with the Iraq aftermath and the West's limp attempts to address it, even the Saudi leadership is wary of further foreign presence in the Arab heartland, openly describing the occupation as illegal. Now, time has come for the head-on-crash between the irresistible force and the immovable object. ElBaradi's couple-of-years-till-the-bomb warning has already prompted calls for sterner sanctions and a new approach that could mean anything from regime change to aerial strikes on enrichment installments. For the second to materialise, the ships just a few miles down the coast will play a very significant role. But stiff opposition from the length and breadth of a united Arab world will mean both approaches will border on the irresponsible considering America's own long term interests. On the other hand, failure to make Iran budge from its stand will only add to the speed of its waning global, particularly Middle East-specific, significance.

Years ago, George Bush brought his armies to a Middle East where his nemesis Iran was a cornered player. Half a decade of his cleansing created numerous loopholes that Teheran quickly exploited to influence insurgencies in Iraq, control politics in Lebanon, drive a wedge in Israel, raise concerns in Saudi Arabia and dominate the region's politics. All this while, America just comes across as a player desperate for the day's play to end. Caution is needed to avoid further use of force.
